Your rights
As a passenger, you have legal rights when your flight is delayed, cancelled, or if you’re denied boarding. These rights are designed to protect you and ensure you’re fairly compensated when things don’t go as planned.
Flight Delays
If your flight is delayed by 3 hours or more, you may be entitled to compensation under EU Regulation 261/2004 or the UK equivalent. The compensation amount can range from £220 up to £520, depending on the flight distance and delay length.
During long delays, airlines are also required to provide:
-
Meals and refreshments appropriate to the waiting time
-
Two free telephone calls, emails, or messages
-
Accommodation and transport if an overnight stay is necessary
Flight Cancellations
If your flight is cancelled, you have the right to:
-
Full refund or re-routing to your destination
-
Compensation of up to £520 if the cancellation was within the airline’s control and you were notified less than 14 days before departure
Denied Boarding
If you are denied boarding due to overbooking or airline decisions:
-
You are entitled to immediate compensation
-
Assistance, including meals, accommodation if necessary, and transport to your destination
